Principal's Notes, 10th March 2021

Welcome to the first edition of the School Newsletter in 2021. I especially welcome families new to Peter Moyes Anglican Community School.

It is hard to believe that we have already passed the halfway mark of Term 1. Despite the challenges presented by a lockdown in week one and the subsequent wearing of masks and increased restrictions in week two, students and staff have now settled back into a more normal school routine. This includes various parent information evenings, Chapel, assemblies, camps, a broad range of co-curricular activities, swimming carnivals and of course the teaching and learning of a fast paced and dynamic curriculum. There is also much to look forward to with the production of We Will Rock You premiering in Week 8, the ACC Interschool Swimming Carnival, the final rounds of the CAS competition and special Chapel services to mark the Easter period.

2020 WACE Results

While we are always looking forward, I am pleased to report some excellent WACE results for the 2020 Year 12 cohort. The School achieved a median ATAR of 81.05, our third consecutive year with a median ATAR over 80. Our Year 12 cohort results compare favourably with our near neighbours and schools with similar demographics. Of particular note, 11 students achieved an ATAR over 95, a sensational result, with two students achieving an ATAR above 99, including the highest individual score in the School’s history. Pleasingly, four courses were recognised for their cohorts who performed amongst the top 15% in the state, with 17 students receiving certificates of excellence, distinction and/or merit. As much as we celebrate our ATAR Pathway students, we also celebrate the accomplishments of our General Pathway students who achieved some very impressive results last year. 32 students completed a total of 38 Certificate II qualifications, with many students securing direct entry into TAFE and/or the workforce as a result. I extend my sincere congratulations to the entire Year 12 cohort of 2020 and we look forward to hearing stories of your success in the years to come.

School Uniform

Further to earlier communications, I am pleased to report that tailored shorts are now an option for female students in Years 7 – 12 as part of our summer uniform. The introduction of a shorts option for female students stems from the work of the Student Representative Council (SRC) who listened to feedback provided by the broader student body. The Executive Team will continue to work with the SRC to review the School uniform to ensure that it meets the needs of all students, while being made from quality materials and at affordable price points. Rest assured however, no changes to the compulsory uniform will be made without an extensive consultation process with all key stakeholders, including parents, students, and staff. Furthermore, significant transition time will be factored in should there be any changes to the compulsory elements of the School uniform.

Year 12 Ball

I recently had the pleasure of attending the Year 12 Ball on Saturday 20 February at Joondalup Resort. The theme for the evening was ‘Starry Night’ and the venue and decorations certainly lived up to expectations. The event was coordinated by the Head of Year 12, Mrs Karen Swain, with significant assistance from parent helpers. They are commended for their significant contribution to the smooth running of this prestigious event, particularly as the Ball needed to be rescheduled at the last minute due to COVID. I also commend the students who were members of the School Ball Committee for their considerable contributions. On the night, all students were immaculately dressed, well behaved and respectful, with everyone enjoying the hospitality provided. It was wonderful to see our staff, students and invited guests engaging with each other and enjoying such a special evening!
