Languages Programme

Peter Moyes Anglican Community School has advocated Language learning and intercultural understanding since the School’s inception. The School has made the deliberate decision to offer a single Asian language, which has led to the School developing the largest Indonesian language programme in Western Australia, if not in Australia with over 1,100 students studying Indonesian.

The Indonesian programme continually demonstrates innovation in language teaching, through AISWA special projects and other initiatives that have seen the School recognised as a Centre for Innovation in Asian Languages.

The Indonesian programme begins in Pre-Primary where students are introduced to songs and games with an emphasis on listening and speaking. Students from Years 1 to 6 learn Indonesian in an environment where they are immersed by language and cultural artefacts. Students also assist with the Indonesian garden and participate in activities in the bamboo and thatched roof ‘pendopo’ (gazeb o).

Students in Year 7 continue the study of Indonesian or may enter a beginners stream, where the program aligns with the standards of the WA Curriculum. In Years 8 and 9, classes are streamed in preparation for those who select language studies in Senior School.

The Year 9 Advanced Indonesian students complete a compacted course of the Year 9 and 10 curriculum content to ensure that topics that would be taught in Year 10 are covered in the Year 9 course. This is to enable students to seamlessly adapt to the ATAR course in Year 11.

Senior School students have the benefit of many years of cumulative language learning, greatly assisting them in post-compulsory language studies, including the School’s Accelerated Indonesian Programme.

Accelerated Indonesian Programme

Since 2013, the School has offered an accelerated pathway. This programme is an opportunity unique to Peter Moyes Indonesian language where high-achieving learners complete the Year 12 ATAR course for Indonesian: Second Language in Year 11.

It has also meant that more Peter Moyes students have successfully completed the ATAR Indonesian course than any other WA school for the last several years. Every year those students taking the Accelerated Indonesian course comprise the majority of students who demonstrate high ranking ATAR results. For these students, Indonesian language is a proven value added course for them to study.

Beyond the Classroom

Secondary School students participate in a range of activities including a Sister School Cultural Exchange located in Surabaya, Indonesian music and cultural performances and special events at the Indonesian Consulate.

In addition, the School regularly offers an overseas Study Tour for students in Years 9 to 12 to travel to Indonesia and experience the language and culture first-hand.

In the Classroom

Language students are privileged to be guided in their language studies by an experienced team of dedicated and highly qualified teachers and language assistants, which add value to the teaching and learning language programmes in Primary and Secondary School. The majority of our teachers are native speakers and have ATAR examination assessor experience which assists them with mentoring their students.
