Curriculum

The Primary School curriculum has a strong focus on Literacy, Numeracy and Information and Communication Technology skills. The core Learning Areas are:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Society and Environment
  • Science
  • Health and Physical Education
  • The Arts (including Music and Visual Arts)
  • Technology and Enterprise
  • Languages Other Than English (Indonesian)
  • Christian and Religious Education.

Our aim is for every classroom to be a technology-rich learning environment, providing our students with strong Information Literacy skills. Each classroom in the Primary School is equipped with an Interactive Whiteboard and data projector. Students have ready access to notebook computers, with the emphasis being on portability, integration, collaboration and connectivity. There is a wide range of software programs available for student use.

The Primary School teachers aim to provide academic learning programmes that cater for different learning styles. Lessons may include play-based investigations, direct teaching, research and project work, peer tutoring and collaborative groupwork. We emphasise the holistic development of the child and offer our students the opportunity to develop their strengths and build on their weaknesses.

We employ specialist teachers for Music, Indonesian, Visual Arts and Physical Education, with students moving to the appropriate specialist facilities for these lessons. The specialist teachers, in conjunction with classroom teachers, also provide a range of activities such as concerts, cultural days, exhibitions and inter-school competitions.

The REACH Programme

(incorporates Learning Support and Academic Extension)

We acknowledge the differing needs of students and seek to cater for each student's particular level of development. Classroom teachers offer a differentiated programme to the students in their care, aiming to cater for the needs of all.

The School also provides the Reach Programme. This incorporates an Academic Extension programme for Gifted and Talented students, as well as a Learning Support programme for those who require additional support with their learning. This programme operates on a system of in–class assistance as well as small group withdrawal, depending on the need.

Camps

Camps form an important part of the Upper Primary Years, providing students in Years 4 to 6 with exciting opportunities to develop character, encourage independence and enhance their learning. The camps are age appropriate and support the curriculum that is covered in each year group, offering a range of challenging, fun and exciting activities.

The current camp locations are:

Year 4 - Two night camp at Fairbridge Village, Pinjarra

Year 5 - Two night camp at New Norcia Camp School

Year 6 - Two night camp at Point Walter, Bicton

Music

Our Primary School offers a strong and varied Music programme. All students attend two class Music lessons per week with a specialist classroom Music teacher. In addition, a specialised programme in Years 3, 4 and 5 allows students the opportunity to learn an instrument through small group or individual tuition. All Year 3 students learn a string instrument for the year (either the violin or the cello). Year 4 students learn the recorder and the ukelele. Students in Year 5 learn a band instrument, combining to form the Year 5 Concert Band. Instruments for the Year 3 and Year 5 programmes, as well as the ukeleles in Year 4, are provided by the School.

Professional music tutors offer instrumental lessons on campus during the school day for students who choose to make use of this opportunity. The Primary School also has a strong choir which operates as a Cocurricular activity.
