The Eighth ASC Piano Competition was to have been hosted by Peter Moyes Anglican Community School in June, 2020, but was cancelled due to Covid-19. Instead the PMACS Music Department organised a virtual event which took place in August and September 2020. Our ASC pianists sent hyperlinks to videos of themselves playing in one or more of the five categories. These categories were based on AMEB or equivalent Grades. These videos were then shared with our three adjudicators: Tracie Wootton, David Goldfinch and Melita Bursac.

166 students from 12 of our ASC schools participated which is the highest number of schools we have had over our eight years: Peter Moyes ACS, St James ACS, Swan Valley ACS, John Septimus Roe ACS, Peter Carnley ACS, St Marks ACS, Frederick Irwin ACS, John Wollaston ACS, St George’s Anglican Grammar School, Georgiana Molloy Anglican School, and from the eastern states, Cobram Anglican Grammar School, and Cathedral College in Wangaratta.

Winners of the categories were announced by way of the ASC Piano Competition video which was created by Bronwyn Booth, and made available to the schools. Certainly, we had interesting moments with how we used video and communications technology and the issues involved. However, it was great to see so many involved.

Congratulations to our many finalists, winners and especially our overall winners namely: first placed Jordan Scott from Swan Valley ACS who played Fantaisie-Impromptu in C# minor by Chopin; 2nd placed Cindy Jones from St Marks ACS and 3rd placed Blair trio from Georgiana Molloy AS.

A big thank you to the many students, teachers and parents involved, the Anglican Schools Commission, Philip Goldsworthy and the ASC Heads of Music. We especially thank Philip Goldsworthy who has kept us together since our first ASC combined event in 2010. We will miss his able, innovative and friendly leadership and wish him the very best in retirement.

A huge well done to all!
