Recently Year 3s and 8s had the opportunity to work with a visiting artist Ms Kate Maloney to create large scale lantern artworks for the upcoming Joondalup Festival. The lanterns that they have made will become part of the City of Joondalup’s annual Twilight Lantern Parade on the evening of Saturday 6th April.

This year’s theme is “A Space Dream” and Art students across the school have been busy preparing a variety of lantern artworks to be part of the parade display this year.

On Monday 25th and Tuesday 26th, 8.2 and 8.4 together with 3.2 and 3.1, worked in ‘buddy’ groups to design and make lanterns from cane which they bent into structures to accompany a life sized ‘bed’ lantern to represent the experience of a ‘Dream’.

The ideas that emerged from the minds of our Year 3s and 8s were amazingly creative and the skill they demonstrated in working with each other and (quite daunting) materials was impressive.

Ms Janice Golding was instrumental in arranging the workshop and applying for funding from Joondalup City Council. She has involved our primary students in the parade over a number of years and each year she sets our PMACS sights higher and the ideas for ways that our students can be involved in this great event become more exciting.

The Art Department and students are looking forward to the lantern parade itself and hoping that many of our PMACS friends and family will take the opportunity to visit this year’s festival to watch the PMACS section of the parade. I am lead to believe that not only will PMACS students be parading in the central sections of the parade this year, but we will likely be one of the lead sections at the front!

More details about this will follow nearer the time!
