On Monday 18th June, the Year 6 Academic Extension students visited the Law Society of Western Australia’s education program in the city and participated in some fascinating activities.

First up was a visit to the Supreme Court, where the roles and responsibilities of the Judges, State and Defence lawyers, the rights of the accused and the rule of law were clearly explained.

Then we visited the Perth Magistrates Court, where we were privileged to witness the Chief Magistrate of Western Australia, Steven Heath, presiding over several “matters” in the court. This opportunity connected the students’ learning about law and order with the real life consequences of breaking the law.

Finally, the students participated in an exemplary manner in a scripted “Mock Trial”, in which every student had a role, acting as judges, the accused, witnesses, the jury and the defence and prosecuting lawyers.

The jury had the tricky job of weighing up the evidence presented and ruling on the verdict and the appropriate sentencing, which was suitably harsh!
