Drama features both as a subject and as a major performing focus in the School. The drama curriculum is designed to meet the creative and academic needs of our students, developing their skills through experiential learning in a fun and safe environment.
Students explore performance from many different aspects, including actor, director and designer. Skills are taught and consolidated through play building and script work as students experience a variety of performance styles. While students are developing their performance techniques, they also learn various elements of stagecraft, including costuming and choreography, and, as they study performance technology, they explore the use of lighting and sound. Drama encourages students to think about and develop skills associated with theatrical performances, and to explore their perceptions and creative responses to the world around them. They are encouraged to develop their skills in solo, group and class situations that help them build confidence.
Drama is offered to all students from Year 2 to Year 12 and covers informative topics such as verbal and non-verbal communication, mime, puppetry, playbuilding, group-devised and scripted drama for live performance. Drama is offered as an elective subject for Year 10,11 and 12 students where they can and expand on the skills they have already learnt. Within the courses, students learn various aspects of drama including Australian and World drama.
Those students who have a special interest in performing or being a part of a live production are encouraged to participate in Sub-School productions.
