On Saturday 27th May the Auditorium in the Allan Shaw Centre, was transformed into a Mouse Racing arena. Armed with a Team of Volunteer parents, many hands made light work of getting all tables, chairs and other strategic bits and pieces into position for the big night.

As crowds flocked in and filled their tables, the format for the night was explained by Marty, the Mouse Racing Man. In each race, a field of 6 thoroughbreds was auctioned off to an array of bidders amongst the crowd with successful bidders “buying” their mount. Once all mounting fees were paid to TAB Central, the betting began on each race. The Sponsors of each race had the privilege of naming the mice for that race, which made for calling of the races interesting to say the least.

The first couple of races were a little slow to get the night running with some cheap mice being sold, but as the night went on and the concept was grasped, the refreshments flowing also helped, the race program proceeded without hitch except for the odd sleepy steed.

I must extend a huge thankyou to Denise and Graham Hughes and Amanda and Frank Chila for managing the two gaming tables for the night, the staff that volunteered to serve refreshments over the course of the evening, and all of the parents for helping to set up the night and carry out a range of roles on the night itself.

A very big and special thank you to Jason Gaske for organising most of the actual night. From the initial planning to collection and delivery of prizes and refreshments, recruiting tables organising raffles and much more, the night simply would not have happened without your expertise and the resources of your business NR Metal Recycling.

Overall, the sum of money raised was just under $6000 for the tour and I must say a big thankyou to the School Community for the support of the Event. I, with the other staff and students involved in the tour certainly look forward to departing on the tour next year, which is only possible from the support from events like this.
